Choosing a fire
Which type suits your home, and what you need to know before you buy.
Browse indoor firesDo I need a chimney for a fireplace or stove?
Not always. Electric fires and bioethanol fires need no chimney or flue, so they suit modern homes, extensions and apartments. Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves need a chimney or a flue system, and gas fires need a suitable flue or balanced-flue outlet. If you don't have a chimney, a stove can often still be fitted with a new flue system, and we can survey your home to check.
What type of fireplace is best for my home?
It depends on your room, how much heat you want and what installation is possible. Electric fires suit media walls and rooms without a chimney. Bioethanol fires give a real flame with no flue. Gas fires give instant, controllable heat. Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves give the most heat and the most atmosphere. The easiest way to decide is to see them working side by side in our Bray showroom.
What's the difference between electric, bioethanol, gas and wood-burning fires?
Electric fires create a flame effect with LED, HD screens or water mist, and can add some heat. Bioethanol fires burn a liquid plant-based fuel for a real flame with no smoke and no flue. Gas fires burn natural gas or LPG through a flue for instant heat at the touch of a button. Wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves burn logs or solid fuel for strong, real heat, and need a chimney or flue.
How do I know what size or heat output I need?
The right output depends on the size of the room, how well the house is insulated, and whether the fire is your main heat or for atmosphere. Too much heat makes a room uncomfortable and a stove run badly, so it is worth getting right. Bring your room measurements to the showroom, or send them to us, and we will recommend the right size and output.
Which fires work in an apartment or a house with no chimney?
Electric fires such as Dimplex, Faber and DRU, and bioethanol fires such as GlammFire, Planika and Le Feu, need no chimney. Bioethanol fires do have a minimum room size for each model, which we check with you before you buy.
Can I put a modern fire into my existing fireplace?
Yes. A fireplace cassette or inset stove such as the Contura i2 turns an open fire into a far more efficient, cleaner-burning fire. If your chimney no longer works, a bioethanol grate like the GlammFire York or an electric inset can bring the fireplace back to life with no working chimney needed.
Switching from oil to pellets
Oil costs more per kWh than wood pellets. A carbon-neutral pellet boiler or stove can cut your heating bills and your emissions.
See pellet stovesIs a pellet boiler or stove cheaper to run than oil?
In SEAI's domestic fuel cost comparison for 1 July 2026, wood pellets cost 10.25 to 10.41 cent per kWh, compared with 11.72 to 12.60 cent per kWh for heating oil. Pellets also aren't tied to world oil prices, so your heating bill is less exposed to the next oil price spike. Actual savings depend on your home, your old boiler and how you heat, and we can talk you through it.
Are wood pellets carbon neutral?
Wood pellets are made from compressed wood, usually sawdust and offcuts. The carbon released when they burn is roughly what the trees absorbed as they grew, so pellets from sustainably managed forests are treated as a carbon-neutral fuel, with far lower lifetime emissions than heating oil.
Can a pellet boiler replace my oil boiler?
In most homes, yes. A pellet boiler connects to your existing radiators and hot water, just like an oil boiler, and feeds itself automatically from a pellet store. It needs space for the boiler and the pellets, and a suitable flue. We survey your home and plan the switch with you.
What's the difference between a pellet boiler and a pellet stove?
A pellet boiler heats your whole house and hot water through your radiators, replacing an oil boiler. A pellet room stove heats the room it's in, with a real flame to look at. A pellet boiler stove does both: it sits in your living room with a visible flame and also heats your radiators and water. Many homes use a pellet room stove to cut how much oil they burn, and a pellet boiler or boiler stove to stop using oil altogether.
How does a pellet stove work?
You fill the hopper with pellets. The stove lights automatically, feeds itself pellets as needed and holds the temperature you set, with timers and, on many models, app control. It's as easy to live with as central heating, with the warmth and flame of a real fire.
Are oil boilers being phased out in Ireland?
Government policy is moving homes away from fossil fuel heating. Building standards for new homes already favour renewable heat, and in 2026 SEAI called for a date after which no new oil or gas boilers can be installed. Switching to pellets now future-proofs your home.
Is there a grant for a pellet boiler or stove?
At the time of writing, SEAI's home energy grants focus on heat pumps and insulation and do not cover pellet boilers or stoves. Supports change, so ask us about anything currently available when you get in touch.
Which pellet boilers and stoves do you sell?
We sell Nordica Extraflame pellet boilers such as the PK and PR ranges, pellet boiler stoves from Nordica Extraflame, Palazzetti and Elcofire that heat your radiators, and pellet room stoves from Ecoforest, Palazzetti, Nordica Extraflame, Klover, Dielle, Elcofire, Aduro, Foco and Atenas, plus Thornhill pellet range cookers.
What pellets should I buy?
Buy good-quality heating pellets, ideally ENplus certified, and store them somewhere dry. Poor or damp pellets burn badly and mean more cleaning. We'll advise on the right pellets for your stove or boiler.
Who installs and services pellet boilers and stoves?
The Soot Doctor, our OFTEC-registered sister company founded by professional firefighter George Tracey, installs and services pellet stoves and boilers, including the flue. A yearly service keeps a pellet appliance clean, efficient and reliable.
Where is the Flamestyle showroom?
Oldcourt Business Park, Boghall Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow, A98 K235. It is minutes from Dublin, with free parking. Phone (01) 444 4625 or email info@flamestyle.ie.
Can I see the fires working before I buy?
Yes, and we recommend it. Many fires are on live display, including Ireland's largest HWAM and WIKING display with stoves burning live, our specialist Dimplex Flame Studio with the new Dimplex Triton 1500, the new DRU Valo, the GlammFire York and two Vlaze outdoor kitchens.
Do you deliver across Ireland?
Yes. We deliver nationwide across Ireland, and install across Leinster and the Midlands.
How long will my fire or stove take to arrive?
Many products are in stock or available quickly. Traeger grills, for example, are typically available from our warehouse in a day or two. Handmade pieces such as JC Bordelet and GlammFire are made to order, so they take longer. We give you an estimated lead time when you order.
Do you have fires on offer or in a sale?
Prices on some models change during the year, and some ranges, such as the new Dimplex Triton, have recently come down in price. Check the product pages or call us for current prices.
Can you install my fireplace or stove?
Yes. Installation is carried out by our sister company, The Soot Doctor, founded in 2011 by professional firefighter George Tracey. We install wood-burning stoves, gas fires, bioethanol fireplaces, electric fires and flue systems across Wicklow, Dublin, Leinster and the Midlands.
Are your installers registered?
Yes. The Soot Doctor's team is OFTEC registered and experienced with stoves, gas fires, bioethanol fires and chimney systems.
Do you survey my home before installing?
Yes. We check the chimney or flue route, the room, the floor and walls around the fire and anything else the installation depends on, so there are no surprises on the day.
Can a wood-burning stove be installed in a timber cabin or garden room?
Yes, when it is done correctly, with the right clearances to combustible walls, heat shielding, a non-combustible hearth, a correctly rated flue where it passes through timber, and a carbon monoxide alarm. Led by a professional firefighter, we have the fire-safety and construction expertise to install wood stoves safely, even in wooden cabins.
Can a suspended fireplace be installed in my home?
In most homes, yes. A suspended fireplace such as a JC Bordelet hangs from the ceiling on its flue, so the ceiling structure, flue route and clearances need to be checked and planned. We survey the room and design the installation around it.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?
If you are fitting a stove or any fuel-burning appliance, you should have a carbon monoxide alarm in the room, and our installers fit one as part of a stove installation. It is one of the simplest ways to keep your home safe.
Why does professional installation matter so much?
Many chimney fires and heating incidents are caused by poorly installed appliances. George Tracey saw this first-hand as a firefighter, which is why The Soot Doctor was founded. Correct installation keeps your home safe and makes the fire work the way it should.
Which wood-burning stove brands do you sell?
We sell HWAM, WIKING, Charnwood, Contura, Thornhill range cookers and more. We are the main agent for Charnwood and Contura, and have the largest HWAM and WIKING display in Ireland.
What is HWAM Autopilot?
HWAM Autopilot is a heat-sensitive spring built into every HWAM stove. It adjusts the air automatically as you light, reload and burn down, with no electricity and no fiddling with controls.
What wood should I burn?
Burn dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Wet wood burns poorly, gives less heat, blackens the glass and causes tar deposits in the chimney. We stock fuel and log storage, and can advise on seasoning and storing wood.
How often should my chimney be swept?
At least once a year for a stove or open fire, and more often if you burn a lot. The Soot Doctor sweeps and inspects chimneys, and can service your stove at the same time.
Is a stove more efficient than an open fire?
Yes, by a long way. An open fire sends most of its heat up the chimney, while a modern stove or cassette keeps it in the room and burns the fuel more cleanly.
Electric & bioethanol fires
Flame effects, water mist and real bioethanol flames.
See electric firesWhat is the difference between Optimyst, Opti-V and Optiflame?
These are Dimplex's three flame technologies. Optimyst uses water mist lit by LEDs for a 3D flame and smoke you can see from any angle. Opti-V uses an HD screen for photorealistic flames with sound. Optiflame, introduced in 1988, uses a moving mirror to create a flickering flame. You can compare all three in our Dimplex Flame Studio.
Do water-mist fires need a water supply?
They need water, but not always a mains connection. Many models, such as the Dimplex Triton, can be filled from a bottle or connected to the mains. Faber fires can use an optional pump kit where there is no water supply nearby.
Do electric fires give out heat?
Many do. Most Dimplex models have an optional heater of up to 2 kW, and some fires, such as the Faber e-MatriX Mood, are designed purely for the flame. You can run most electric fires as flame only all year.
Are bioethanol fires safe?
Yes, when they are correctly chosen and installed. Each model has a minimum room size, it needs sensible clearances, and you should never refill a burner while it is lit or hot. Automatic models such as GlammFire EVOPlus and Planika fires add built-in safety sensors.
Do bioethanol fires give real heat?
Yes. They burn a real flame and give off real warmth, with no smoke, soot or ash, although they are chosen more for the flame and atmosphere than as a main heat source.
